To begin with, you will see from the examples below that shoulder has mainly two meanings: a body part and the part of a road. Take a look at the following examples. Can you tell which is which?

You will also see that a shoulder, whether a body part or part of a road, can be right or left.

Here are a few more examples:

The third most frequent adjective is cold, as in:

  • Hardie half expected the reaction he received: the cold shoulder.
  • He kept getting the cold shoulder.
  • The military meantime continued to give him the cold shoulder.

Can you guess the meaning? Does the picture give you any idea?

Yes, the meaning is “to ignore”. But take a look at the verbs that go with cold shoulder:
  • Initially, it was Greek and Portuguese banks that got the cold shoulder from American lenders.
  • Locanda Verde: Manhattan foodies gave a cold shoulder to Ago, the inaugural restaurant within the Greenwich Hotel.

That’s right, you can GIVE someone a/the cold shoulder, TURN a cold shoulder to someone but you can also GET a/the cold shoulder.
The meaning of the next collocation is pretty straightforward:
  • He covered her bare shoulder with a clammy hand.
  • Abdul tossed her hair to the right side, hiding her bare shoulder.
  • Quick Mike walks over to a peg and hangs a gunbelt over his bare shoulder.
Although bare and naked are near synonyms, bare collocates with shoulder much more frequently than naked does. The count is 64 for bare and only 14 for naked. In any case, here are a couple of examples with naked shoulder.
  • Her dressing gown slipped off her naked shoulder, prompting one of his eyebrows to rise.
  • At one point I felt a moment of panic when I saw a naked shoulder protruding from his bathrobe.

Some other collocations with a pretty literal meaning:

But front shoulder may also refer to a certain meat cut:

Most collocations are quite literal for both meanings of shoulder:

In Major League Baseball, the disabled list (DL) is a method for teams to remove their injured players from the roster in order to summon healthy players.
The injured reserve list (abbr.  IR list) is an official designation used by the National Football League (NFL) and National Hockey League (NHL) for athletes who become injured and temporarily unable to play. It is analogous to the injured list in the Canadian Football League (CFL), the inactive list in the National Basketball Association (NBA), or the disabled list in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Some injuries can be quite serious though:

If you’re interested in finding out more about those injuries, take a look at https://www.emedicinehealth.com/shoulder_problems_and_injuries-health/article_em.htm

Hoping you will never be affected by any of those injuries, let’s move to a more pleasant domain, garments:
