Working with Numbers from 11 to 20 – Paulo Torres

Paulo Torres worked on this activity at the municipal school he works for and is now sharing it. It was used with his third graders (4º ano) – Fundamental I.
 
NB Although this activity was used at a municipal school, it can easily be adapted for different educational contexts.
  
Introducing (Class 1)
Focus: Cardinal Numbers
Age: Any
Level: Beginner
Time: 30-40 minutes
Preparation: A set of flashcards with cardinal numbers from 11 to 20 and a set of word flashcards with cardinal numbers from 11 to 20.

  1. Using flashcards with cardinal numbers from 11 to 20, in ascending order, show each number at a time, say the number and have SS. repeat. While you do this, use one arm to show the stressed syllable by moving it up and down in the air and have SS. do the same. Follow the same procedure once again.

 

  1. Show the flashcards once again but do not say the numbers. Instead, have SS. do it. Have them move their arm up and down in the air according to the stressed syllable. Follow the same procedure one more time.

 

  1. Using word flashcards with cardinal numbers from 11 to 20, work on steps 1 and 2 again.

 

  1. Stick the worksheet below to the board and explain the activity. Hand out the worksheet and have SS. work on it. While SS. do so, walk around and help if necessary. Check.

Reviewing (Class 2)
Focus: Cardinal Numbers
Age: Any
Level: Beginner
Time: 30-40 minutes
Preparation: A set of flashcards with cardinal numbers from 11 to 20 and a set of word flashcards with cardinal numbers from 11 to 20.
 

  1. Stick the flashcards with cardinal numbers from 11 to 20 to the wall in ascending order. Give a S. a word flashcard with cardinal numbers from 11 to 20 and have them stick it next to the correct flashcard. Follow the same procedure for all the numbers. Use crepe masking tape to stick the flashcards to the wall so that the tape does not peel it. Have SS. who are sitting say if it is right or wrong. Also have SS. say the numbers and move their arm up and down in the air according to the stressed syllable. Work on this step again with different SS. as many times as you want.

 

  1. Work on step 1 again but with the flashcards stuck randomly this time. Work on this step again with different SS. as many times as you want.

 

  1. Stick the following worksheet to the board and explain the activity. Hand out the worksheet and have SS. work on it. While SS. do so, walk around and help if necessary. Check.
