The world of online gaming has become more and more popular in recent years, being one of the main hobbies of the younger generations. It doesn’t require people to leave the house and, for some, that can be seen as an advantage. Online gaming can connect people all around the world and, like most groups of people who share the same interest, slang and abbreviations are often used to improve the gaming experience and, most of all, to not waste time using full sentences.

As online gaming has become more widespread, the use of those expressions can also be found in common everyday conversations (especially among young people). Let’s see some examples:

It’s often used after the game is over. Can also be used sarcastically when you and your team lost

FORTE DEMAIS; FORTE SEM MEIO TERMO

Can be used for characters, weapons or abilities.

NOVATO; JOGADOR INEXPERIENTE

We have to kill the enemy to get our loot!

Loots can be obtained by killing an enemy, finishing missions or they can just be found in-game.

AFK (AWAY FROM KEYBOARD)
LONGE DO TECLADO

I’m gonna be AFK, wait for me to come back!
Eu vou ficar longe do teclado, me espera voltar!

Used when you need to be away from the game, but will come back.

WP (WELL PLAYED)
BEM JOGADO; JOGOU BEM

ENFRAQUECIDO

Sorry, that guy just nerfed me.
Desculpa, aquele cara me enfraqueceu.

Used when something (a player, an item, an ability, etc.) makes a player weaker (using in-game skills or items).

BUFF
FORTALECIDO

Don’t worry! I just drank a potion and now I’m buffed!
Não se preocupe! Eu acabei de beber uma poção e estou fortalecido!
It’s the opposite of nerf.

RUSH

Can be used for players that aren’t professional, but as a compliment for their skills.
