Snappy Sounds

Snappy Sounds is a systematic, synthetic phonics program, built by world leading educators, authors and speech pathologists, designed to make teaching phonics as simple and as speedy as possible for you and your class. Using Snappy Sounds will have pupils reading and enjoying their first book by the end of week 1.

The Snappy Sounds decodable books include:

• Systematic introduction and revision of the letter-sounds correspondences, introduced by the series’ teaching sequence
• A wide variety of fiction and nonfiction text types, which have meaning and are designed to engage all students’ tastes
• Age appropriate vocabulary and text that is not highly predictable, so students are not encouraged to guess
• Guided reading notes that include before and after reading activities. These activities provide robust practise of decodable and high frequency words, as well as comprehension and vocabulary checks, and fluency activities
• Consolidation & revision books, allowing all students to practise what they have learned to date, whilst providing teachers with time to support students who have not yet mastered the letters and sounds in that level.

The Authors

Written by Phillip W. Simpson is the author of many novels, chapter books and other stories for children. His publishers include Macmillan, Penguin, Pearson, Cengage, Raintree and Oxford University Press. He received his undergraduate degree in Ancient History and Archaeology, his Masters (Hons) degree in Archaeology and his Masters (Hons) degree in Creative Writing from the University of Auckland. He is currently working towards his Doctorate in Education, focusing on teaching children’s creative writing. Before embarking on his writing career, he joined the army as an officer cadet, owned a comic shop and worked in recruitment in both the UK and Australia. His first young adult novel, Rapture (Rapture Trilogy #1), was shortlisted for the Sir Julius Vogel Awards for best Youth novel in 2012.

Fraser Williamson Illustrated by Fraser ‘Fraz’ Williamson is an artist/illustrator whose work ranges from large illustrative soul paintings, which depict dream and spiritual life, to quirky children’s books which try to amuse and entertain. Fraser wishes to portray characters and environments that allow for imagination and diversity.
Time spent in Tonga surfing and living with his wife Loisi’s family has been translated into many of his educational and trade books. He has worked for many publishing companies and has illustrated many stories and plays for Learning Media’s School Journal. Fraser works on commercial projects as well. Anchor milk is one of the best known of these.
Fraser says that he hopes that as children and adults look at his work they can find a place for their own imagination and eccentricity in a world that seems to increasingly worship conformity and ‘right’ thinking. His work has been used by Storylines on their website and for the Storylines Festival.
Fraser has recently spent time in Spain which laid the foundation for an exhibition of paintings. He continues to divide his time between New Zealand, Spain and Tonga.
