COBRA, CONDUCTOR AND DORMITORY: Are you familiar with these false friends?
COBRA
O substantivo cobra se refere não a qualquer cobra , e sim à “naja”, que tem a cabeça mais larga e é comum na África e Ásia. Entre outras espécies de cobra , vale a pena mencionar a rattle snake (cascavel ), a anaconda (sucuri ) e a boa constrictor, ou simplesmente boa (jibóia ).
Cobras are more common in African and Asian countries.
A naja é mais comum em países africanos e asiáticos.
Carol thinks snakes are repulsive.
Carol acha as cobras nojentas.
CONDUCTOR
Significa “maestro ; regente de orquestra”.
“How about tuning up your instruments?”, the conductor asked the musicians before starting the rehearsal.
“Que tal afinarem os instrumentos ?”, o maestro pediu aos músicos antes de iniciar o ensaio .
James has worked as a school bus driver for the past fifteen years.
James tem trabalhado como condutor de ônibus escolar nos últimos 15 anos .
DORMITORY
Students can choose between two kinds of accommodation: the campus dormitory or apartments nearby.
Os estudantes podem escolher entre dois tipos de acomodação: o alojamento no campus ou apartamentos próximos.
“Our bedroom is too bright”, said Eric. “We need to buy some curtains.”
“O nosso quarto está claro demais”, disse Eric. “Precisamos comprar umas cortinas .”
“I’m looking for an apartment with three bedrooms and a balcony”, Mrs. Vaughan told the real estate agent.
