Phrasal Verbs
Try on: to put on clothes, shoes, etc. to test the fit or check the appearance (provar, experimentar roupas, sapatos, etc.)
“Can I try on a larger size?”, Jack asked the clerk at the store. “This shirt is too tight.”
“Posso experimentar um número maior?”, Jack pediu ao atendente da loja. “Esta camisa está apertada demais.”
Put up with: to tolerate (tolerar, agüentar, suportar)
Liz got really angry and told Mike she wouldn’t put up with his arrogant behavior any longer.
Liz ficou realmente brava e disse a Mike que não iria mais tolerar o comportamento arrogante dele.
“I sometimes find it hard to put up with my friend Rick’s mood swings. He can be so surly!”, John told Cheryl.
“Eu às vezes acho difícil agüentar as alterações de humor de meu amigo Rick. Ele consegue ser tão mal-humorado!”, John disse para Cheryl.
Knock out
1. to hit and make someone unconscious (nocautear alguém)
“Jack is really a tough guy. Last week, I saw him get into a fight and knock out a guy with only one punch”, Ron told his friends.
“Jack é um cara durão mesmo. Na semana passada, eu o vi entrar numa briga e nocautear um cara com um soco apenas”, Ron disse a seus amigos.
Na forma adjetiva, knockout usa-se em a knockout punch ou a knockout blow, significando um soco que deixa alguém inconsciente, a nocaute.
2. to impress someone greatly, to cause admiration (impressionar, causar admiração)
“That science fiction movie you told me about really knocked me out. Thanks for the tip”, Jeff told his friend Luke.“Aquele filme de ficção cientifica que você recomendou realmente me impressionou bastante. Obrigado pela dica”, Jeff disse a seu amigo Luke.
A expressão to be a knockout significa “ser extremamente atraente”.
“She is a real knockout. Just look at how gorgeous she is”, Bill told his friend Jake as both of them looked at the girl in the pub.
“Ela é realmente muito atraente. Olhe só como é linda”, Bill disse a seu amigo Jake enquanto ambos olhavam a garota no pub.
