Sesame Street Videos

By Carlos Gontow*

Sesame Street is an American TV program which has been on for about 40 years. The program focuses on preschool kids, but it’s also wonderful for people of any age who want to learn English as a foreign language.

I strongly recommend using the Sesame Street videos with your students. They will have fun and they will also learn a lot.

There are many videos available online and they’re very easy to get. Most of the videos are short. They won’t use up a lot of class time and, because they’re short, you can play them several times.

Among the videos that you can find, there’s a very nice series of videos where the Sesame Streetcharacters and different celebrities teach vocabulary. The videos are really good, because the words are taught in context, always in a humorous way.

We all know that a picture is worth a thousand words. These videos can help students visualize the words they’re learning.

Here are a few examples of very nice videos.
Craig Ferguson Explains the Word Experiment

Johnny Galecki Explains the Word Transform

Jake Gyllenhaal: Separate

Jack Black defines Octagon

Jerry O’Connell Explains the Word Observe

These are just a few examples, but there are many more. If you are interested, check www.youtube.comor https://www.sesamestreet.org/

As teachers, it’s our job to help our students to learn. The Sesame Street videos are a great resource for them.
